What Does “Soul Submitted” Actually Mean?
Someone once asked me what Soul Submitted means.
Which is a very reasonable question when you've named a clothing company something that sounds
like it could either be deeply theological or possibly the name of a very intense yoga retreat.
It is, thankfully, the first one.
The name actually came from a phrase I heard during a message during Covid. I was listening to a mentor teach on what happens when you become a Christian. That your spirit is made new in Christ.
But then there is the rest of you:
YOUR SOUL: (Your mind, Your will, Your emotions, Your thoughts) and YOUR BODY and they all need to be submitted to Christ
I wrote these words - Soul Submitted
Being spiritually born again doesn't mean that the rest of you magically gets the 'submit to Christ memo'.
NOPE Its a daily choice to outwork that reality in soul and body for the rest of your Christian life.
I really don't know when I connected the Soul Submitted term with the redeeming the use of the cross mandate ( I'll write about that sometime soon ) that had been stirring in me but when I did, it totally stuck because it was describing something I had been learning and training up my children in for years.
About a life submitted. That following Jesus isn't about becoming some perfectly behaved, polished version of yourself. It is a continual process of allowing what you think, what you want, what you feel and how you live to come into alignment with what you believe the Word of God says : That you are made a NEW CREATION in Christ Jesus - the old has passed away. 1 Corinthians 5:17
Soul Submitted
Faith is easy to talk about when everything is going well. It's a different thing when your emotions are screaming one thing and what you believe is telling you another.
When your circumstances don't make sense, When you're offended, When you're afraid. When you want control. When you want to be right. Yep. Those defining moments is where the soul must be submitted to Christ.
And I don't mean that in some weird, miserable, “suppress yourself and don't have feelings” kind of way.
Quite the opposite. For me, it's about freedom. Freedom to stop being ruled by every thought, emotion, fear or circumstance that comes along. Freedom to remember who I am beyond what is happening around me.
Freedom to let Christ shape not just what I say I believe, but how I actually live.
That is what Soul Submitted means to me.
And eventually it became more than a phrase I wrote down in a notebook.
It became a name.
Then a shirt.
Then a clothing company.
And now, every time I see those two words, I still think about the same thing.
It's not about having it all together.
It's about knowing who you're submitted to and continuing to let Him work on the rest.
Keep going,
